Modifying Japanese NEC Grafx Console

Well, here's a quick 'n' dirty mod page for your Japanese NEC Grafx unit. Information for this mod was taken from the Turbolist homepage, When you perform this mod, you will still be able to use both your Japanese HuCards, as well as US HuCards, although the US ones will still require an adaptor.

This mod is dead easy to perform. The most difficult part is opening the unit. The Japanese Duo-R uses security-torx bits, and most other units (CoreGrafx, PCE, SuperGrafx) use GameBit screws. Once that's accomplished, simply look for the chip labelled Hu6280. On the board are some white labels, indicating pin numbers. Now locate pin 29 of this chip, and now comes the tricky bit.

[- Hu6280 IC -]
Locate IC 6280

[- Hu6280 IC -]
Connect pin 29 to GROUND

Take a soldering iron and heat the base of pin 29, while gently prying up at it with a small jewelers screwdriver or x-acto knife. Once this chip is free of the board, lift it to a horizontal position. Do not over-stress or bend this pin unecessarily!! As I'm sure you've noticed, metal things will break if you wave them back and forth a lot. If this breaks, you're in deep trouble!!

Now, locate a ground point somewhere on the main board. It'll be easy to spot, it's usually a large, wide strip running around the edge of the board. You should have no trouble finding something attached to this ground plane and you should attach one end of a short wire to the ground-plane, and the other end to the now-horizontal pin 29 of chip Hu6280.
